DanRic Homes sponsors PBIS Program for local school

Recently, DanRic Homes purchased the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Rewards Program for Gardner Newman Middle School. Today, we were invited to learn how the new program is benefitting the students and staff at GNMS.

The PBIS Rewards Program uses app-based technology to reward students with points for practicing the three principles the school expects from them – to be RespectfulResponsible, and Ready to Learn.

Previously, the school was using a more tedious version of the PBIS program in which the teachers & staff handed out tiny slips of paper called Mustang Bucks to reward students. The teachers were tasked with the job of cutting and filling out the little pieces of paper, while the students were responsible for keeping track of their collected bucks. Under the new system, the teachers & staff can use an app on their phones to quickly scan a student’s lanyard and add points to their account. The students can then spend these points in the school store (sponsored by Synovus) – where they may purchase items like pencils, notebooks, and candy. Conversely, they can save up their points for more expensive intangible rewards, like lunch with a friend in one of the diner-style booths in the cafeteria.

The head of PBIS at GNMS, Mrs. Butler, says it’s been very successful so far; she expects even more success in the months to come. She also reports that the students and staff are excited about the lanyards, and are very pleased with the new user-friendly app. Mrs. Butler additionally noted – that one unexpected benefit of the lanyards – is that it’s now much easier to get to know the students by name.

DanRic Homes is pleased to report that the PBIS school store opened for business for the first time this week, and according to students & staff, the line has been out the door!

Thanks so much for having us, Gardner Newman Middle School and staff. We are happy to have been able to fund this program, and we can’t wait to hear more about the additional positive effects to come!

PBIS Rewards is a program designed to encourage learning and support good behavior through positive reinforcement. Their website states “PBIS is an evidence-based three-tiered framework for improving and integrating all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. It improves social, emotional, and academic outcomes for all students – including students with disabilities, and students from underrepresented groups.” To learn more about the PBIS Program, please visit PBIS.org.
